For 2027, plan your creator marketing around the second and third stream, not the first. We followed 133,644 creators across Twitch’s 20 most-watched games from May to October 2026. Of the creators who quit a game in their first month, 94% went live with it exactly once. Of new creators who reached a third stream, only 6% left.
That one pattern drives most of the trends below. The core finding is in Creator communities are won on the third stream.
Eight trends to plan for in 2027
| Trend | What the data shows | What to do in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Retention beats reach | First-month churn is 94% after one stream, 30% after two, 6% after three | Brief for several sessions in the first 30 days, not one launch stream |
| 2. Your core carries the game | Core creators are 28% of creators and 60% of watch time; median churn 4% against 23% for variety streamers | Find your core by game share, keep them briefed between launches |
| 3. Launch months run on variety streamers | Core creators brought in 18% of Modern Warfare 4’s launch-month watch time | Plan the weeks after launch before launch day |
| 4. Creators follow the release calendar | 31% stream two or more top-20 games; every game that gained creators in October had news | Re-engage shared creators before your updates and your rivals’ launches |
| 5. Churn is reversible | 41% of June’s churners streamed the game again by October 31 | Keep a win-back list and brief it before every update |
| 6. The mid-tier converts best | First-timers with 10 to 49 viewers were the likeliest to become active | Spread budget across mid-tier creators, not only big channels |
| 7. Sponsorships open to Affiliates | Twitch opened its Sponsorship Dashboard to Affiliates on August 20, 2026 | Use the dashboard to reach the mid-tier at scale |
| 8. Count creators, not only hours | Since May 2026, live creators fell 19% in GTA V and 14% in Apex Legends | Track live and new creators per month next to hours watched |
1. Retention beats reach
A creator counts as churned after 31 days without streaming a game. For new creators, that happens fast. Across the 16 established games in the top 20, 54% of new creators churned when their first month ended and 32% became active.
The number of streams in that month tells you almost everything. And converting a new creator pays off quickly: in month one, a creator who converts brings in about 23 times the watch time of one who quits (421 hours against 18, median).
2. Your core carries the game
We call a creator core when a game takes 80% or more of their airtime. Core creators are 28% of creators in the top 20 games and bring in 60% of watch time. In October 2026 they churned at a median 4%, against 23% for variety streamers, who give a game less than 20% of their airtime.
Publishers are moving the same way. EA’s Battlefield 6 creator program lowered its entry bar in its second season to grow a broader base of regular creators.
3. Launch months run on variety streamers
Four top-20 games launched or went global between August and October 2026. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s launch month, core creators brought in 18% of its watch time, and creators who mainly stream other games brought in 63%. Wardogs had 8,779 live creators in September, its launch month, and 5,507 in October.
Sports and MMO launches held better. 72% of EA Sports FC 27’s new creators became active, and 74% of AION 2’s.
4. Creators follow the release calendar
31% of creators in the top 20 stream two or more of these games. In October 2026, the games that gained the most creators from the others were AION 2 (3,148, after its global launch on October 5), Modern Warfare 4 (2,272) and Deadlock (2,154). Marvel Rivals (−1,107) and Wardogs (−1,086) lost the most.
Some games share large parts of their creator base: 22% of League of Legends creators also stream VALORANT, and 21% of Dota 2 creators also stream Counter-Strike.
5. Churn is reversible
Of the 32,730 creators who churned from these games in June 2026, 41% streamed the game again by October 31. Core creators came back more often (46%) than variety streamers (39%). ARC Raiders’ Frozen Trail update on October 8 brought back 917 churned creators in one month.
6. The mid-tier converts best
First-timers with 10 to 49 viewers were the likeliest to become active creators. Bigger first-timers were no more likely to stay. Channels averaging 1,000+ viewers are a small share of creators but a median 55% of watch time in the established games, so a broad mid-tier also makes a game less exposed to one big channel going quiet.
7. Sponsorships open to Affiliates
Since August 20, 2026, Twitch Affiliates worldwide can get brand sponsorships through the Twitch Sponsorship Dashboard after completing the Creator Sponsorship Certification. For games, that is the most direct route to the mid-tier creators who convert best. Wehype is an official Twitch partner, and our campaigns can run inside the dashboard.
8. Count creators, not only hours
Hours watched don’t show how many creators a game has. From May to October 2026, live creators fell 19% in GTA V ahead of GTA VI on November 19, 14% in Apex Legends and 13% in Marvel Rivals and Counter-Strike. Deadlock, World of Warcraft, Minecraft and Fortnite grew. Tracking new, active, at-risk and churned creators every month shows a leak before it shows up in hours watched. How to plan your 2027 creator calendar
- Set a retention goal, not only a reach goal. For example: share of new creators still streaming after 30 days.
- Ask for three sessions. Briefs, Drops and Community Rewards that reward a few streams in the first 30 days.
- Check in before day 14. A new creator who has been quiet for two weeks is about to turn at risk.
- Map your shared creators. Know which rival games your creators also stream, and when those games launch or update.
- Brief your win-back list before every update. Churned core creators are the cheapest creators to bring back.
- Track creators monthly. Community Insights shows who is new, active, at risk and churned in your game’s creator community.
