Creator communities are won on the third stream

Every month, thousands of streamers try a new game on Twitch. Half of them go live with it only once in their first month. We followed new creators across Twitch’s 20 most-watched games to find out what turns a first stream into a regular one. The answer is three streams.

The first stream is the cliff

A creator counts as churned after 31 days without streaming a game. For new creators, that verdict lands fast.

We looked at 6,150 new creators whose first month with a game ended in October 2026, across the 16 established games in the top 20 (we left out four titles that launched or went global this autumn). Of the creators who churned at the end of that month, 94% had gone live with the game exactly once.

Three streams change the odds

The number of streams in month one tells you almost everything:

  • One stream: 94% churned.
  • Two streams: 30% churned.
  • Three streams: 6% churned.

  • 6+ streams1%2,087 creators, 83% became active

Established games only, new creators whose first month ended in October 2026.

After three streams, 39% had already become active, meaning they kept streaming the game into a second month. Most of the rest were at risk, quieter but not gone. Every stream after that pushes churn lower, but the big drop happens between the first and the third.

Hours tell the same story. Under 2 hours streamed in month one: 90% churned. Between 10 and 25 hours: 2%.

Established games only, new creators whose first month ended in October 2026.

This is a correlation, not a magic switch. Creators who already like a game stream it more. But the curve is this steep in all 16 games, which makes the second and third stream the clearest place for a publisher to step in.

Why it’s worth chasing

A creator who stays is worth far more than one who tries the game once. In month one, a new creator who became active brought in a median 421 hours watched. One who churned brought in 18. That’s about 23 times more, before counting the months that follow.

What to do with it

  1. Plan for the second and third stream. Briefs, Drops and rewards that ask for a few sessions within the first 30 days, not just one launch-day stream.
  2. Follow up after the first stream. The step from one to two streams is where most creators are lost. A quick note, a key or a next challenge can be enough.
  3. Track streams per creator, not only reach. How many creators reached a third stream says more about your community than launch-day hours watched.

How we measured

  • Data: Wehype Community Insights for Twitch, the 20 most-watched game categories on Twitch in the 30 days to October 29, 2026, according to TwitchMetrics.
  • First month: new creators whose first month with a game ended in October 2026, in the 16 established games. A creator is new for 30 days after their first stream of a game.
  • Statuses: active means streamed the game in both of the last two 30-day windows. At risk means last streamed it 14 to 30 days ago. Churned means 31 days without streaming it.
  • Limits: Twitch only, and these are associations, not proof of cause.
  • Open data: the full dataset is on Zenodo under CC BY 4.0, doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23897373.

Want to see this for your own game? Community Insights shows who’s new, active, at risk and churned in your creator community, and our team can help you act on it. Stay hyped.

Chart: churn after a creator's first month falls from 94% after one stream to 6% after three streams
